In earlier times, battery was an integral part of the solar system. But now, solar systems can run without battery, which is more efficient than normal battery systems. So, we will discuss how you can run a solar system without battery and take maximum benefit from it.
Battery was used in most of the systems because in Pakistan, most of the systems were off-grid. There was no net metering, so battery was used in every solar system. But now, with the passage of time, there are such inverters that can run battery-less. Apart from this, there are other systems like off-grid tube well systems or solar Atta Chakki/flour mill system. There are many such systems that can run without battery.
So, first of all, let’s talk about home systems. If you want to install an off-grid system and there is no network in your area, then you can install a battery. But in most of the areas of Pakistan, the network facility is available, power is available and load shedding is also decreasing day by day. So, due to this, the importance of the battery will not be the same as it was in earlier times.
The Problem with Batteries
The cost of the battery is a major cost in the solar system. If we eliminate the battery, then we can install a price-effective solar system. When we install a 5 kW system, then it requires 4 batteries. If we install a 3 kW system, then it requires 2 batteries.
And over the time, after 2 to 3 years, the batteries get damaged and sometimes they get damaged quickly. That is why in today’s video, we will discuss how you can install a battery-less system. Generally, 3 kW or 5 kW systems are installed in homes.
3-5 kW Systems
So, in 3 and 5 kW systems, there are VM2 model inverters that can run without a battery. On these systems, you can power up your home through solar all day. These inverters run even when the power is off because they can run directly on a single source. In this, there is also an inverter of the Infinite V2 model that can run without a battery.
And at the moment, there are many more models coming in the market, including Tesla’s HLE model. And there are also many models in Crown that can run without a battery.
Benefits of Battery-less Solar Solutions
The advantage of these is that you can run them on a single source. Along with that, instead of storing extra energy in the battery, you can store it in a WAPDA bank through a net metering. And through a net metering, through a bidirectional meter, you can sell electricity to WAPDA and take the same units at night.
Eliminating Recurring Battery Costs
So, the maximum benefit will be that you will not face any recurring costs. The hassle of changing the battery after every 2 to 3 years will also be over. Plus, your capital cost will also be reduced.
How Solar Tube Well Systems Operate Without Batteries
Similarly, if we come to the second system, which is the tube well system. In the tube well system, the solar tube well systems also run without a battery. What happens in these is that a VFD inverter is used, which takes energy from the solar, converts it into AC, and runs the tube well directly. Or there is another system in this, which is the DC system. The DC system is not very efficient for the tube wells.
But they also run where there are small tube wells, or the water level is a little higher. If it is on a higher surface, then the DC system can also run there. It can also directly take DC current from the solar and run the DC motor ahead and pump it in. And these systems run without a battery.
Benefits
The benefit of running the tube well without a battery is that you run it directly from the solar all day. Capital costs are also involved. Because tube wells take a lot of power. 10HP, 15HP, 20HP. Even if there is a 5HP tube well, it will cost a lot. So that’s why the tube well systems also run without a battery.
Powering Your Atta Chakki with Solar Energy
Then comes the solar Atta Chakki. You can also run the Atta Chakki/flour mill without a battery. On the Atta Chakki/flour mill, if you have a 10HP or 15HP Atta Chakki/flour mill, you can put a 10kW solar system on it, and run it without a battery. And you can also save your major cost, which is the investment in batteries.
Then comes Industries. Industries also no longer need a battery-powered solar system. Because the grid-tied system has come. What does the grid-tied system do?
Grid-Tied Solar Systems: A Battery-Free Solution for Factories
It takes energy from the solar. Through the grid-tied inverter, in the entire industry and any commercial setup where there is a lot of consumption, all the energy is connected to the main bus power. And it is synchronized with the grid and solar, and runs it in your office, your factory or any place where there is a heavy load. There is no battery involvement in this, because it can run your factory directly by taking energy from the sunlight. And one advantage of the grid-tied system is that it sails out all the extra energy.
So you can not only install a bio-transmission meter in your homes, but you can also install a biotransmission meter in your factories. The same energy that we used to store in batteries, store it during the day and use it at night, and it is an inefficient system. Obviously, when we save energy in batteries, then there are some losses in AC to DC conversion.
Why Industrial Solar Systems No Longer Need Batteries
Because in batteries, energy is saved in DC form. And all the equipment in our homes is AC. Or the equipment in factories is above AC 220 or 443 phase. So when we convert the DC current of the battery in AC, there are also losses. It is an inefficient method. Plus, there was a lot of storage cost.
Plus, there is a recurring cost of batteries. Batteries get damaged after 2-3 years. To avoid all these things, grid-tied systems are also installed in factories. These are net metering enabled systems, battery-less systems, and they run all day. And at night, obviously, it does not work because it does not have storage. But at night, you can replace the units
given by net metering.
And you can replace them again. In addition to this, we have seen that battery-less systems run on a small scale. Like in villages, there is a lot of long load shedding. And they are not very affordable. So they take one solar panel and can run DC cooler, DC lights, and DC fans directly on DC current. These DC appliances take direct DC current from solar panel and run directly on DC 12V.
These can run on solar panels, lights, fans, or water coolers. All such equipments can run batteryless from morning to evening as long as solar energy is available. It can run without battery. So people who cannot afford expensive solar systems and have long load shedding in their areas or are available in a stand-alone place where there is no availability of power, they can also install battery-less systems there. These things can be run with small 12V equipment. So these are all the ways in which you can run battery-less systems.
